Tools for detail strip

I just purchased a punch set that includes 1/16", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32" and a brass drift punch.

Will this generally be adequate for stripping my gun? More specifically will it work with the roll pin or should i get a roll pin punch for it too? What about extra pins...should i expect to damage my roll pin and buy a pack of them?

These should work fine.

You are missing...

You forgot the BFH (and you'll need duct tape for reassembly.)

You should be able to take care of the roll pin with the punches you have, but a roll pin punch does work better. I really like the roll pin starter punch that Brownells offers (it is shorter than normal roll pin punches). It is a good idea to have extra rolls pins--compress and decompress one enough and it will break--usually when you have no spares and a match the next day. BTW, don't drive your roll pin completely out--just drive it far enough (from the inside) to remove the striker. Also be sure you have removed the striker before trying to remove the extractor.

A bench block would also be handy, but scrap pieces of wood work also.

Do you have the Lyman punch set from Brownells? If so I have the same one, used it many times with no damage what so ever to the roll pin. Also those punch sizes sound right from what I remember to correctly remove the pins on the XD. Like others said, you will probably want to have some extra roll pins around as backup anyways, that is much cheaper than buying a roll pin punch.

There are some reassembly “tricks” out there like slave pins, Q-Tips and wire that work well to get the parts and pins back in place for reassembly. Do a search on Disassembly and Reassembly on this site and you’ll catch on to some different techniques that people use to get the XD back together.

Unless you plan on taking this gun apart a whole lot, it is not worth the money. In a pinch I have taken the XDs apart with a couple of nails. With the exception of the sights it takes very little effort to move these pins. It's nice to have a set of punches but there is no need to go overboard. Of course if you just like to buy new tools then have at it.

I'm not sure about the duct tape ...... But the BFH ... If you've ever seen the AGI Armorer's video on the XD ... A BFG with a softface is the easy way to remove an extractor.
