But the stuff I would depend on, really comes down to how it feels. The caliber argument IMO used to carry more weight than it does today. If it feels good .... Get it

Potentially ... It depends on the projectile diameter, mass, velocity, and shape/design characteriztics.

My personal preference is .45 - not for any 'ballistics' or 'terminal performance' reasons, but just because I love the round and shoot it well. That being said, I probably shoot twice as much 9mm as I do .45 simply because the price of the .45 is so darn high these days. If you put a 9mm and a .45 in front of me and asked me choose (as long as you're paying for the ammo) I'll take the .45 every time, although I do have some
I've never really been inclined to use the .40 though - for some reason it just never appealed to me. I'm not saying that its not a good round, I've just never felt the need to own one. Everybody has their reasons... Any one of them - 9mm, .40, or .45 - will most likely be enough to convince any bad guy that he picked the wrong target and will quite effectively ruin his day. Arguments as to which is better are akin to discussing religion or politics - everybody has their own belief and its very unlikely that they will change. Me, I like my .45 and that's good enough for me!

The argument that "one well placed bullet" negates the caliber debate cracks me up. My philiosophy is that in a stressful situation where I am likely to not have good trigger discipline and perhaps jerk or slap the trigger and pull my shots left .... and likley to not hit the head or center mass then I go with the .45. I'm just thinking out loud here but say instead of hitting center mass you hit the left chest outside the nipple line or perhaps the shoulder. Any caliber will cause damage but I just feel that a .45 will probably stop the BG even though it isn't a CM/head shot.
Having both a .40 and a .45 I prefer the .45.

I like the .45 in the given circumstanes. I like high round capacity though....like stated before, in a stressful situation all plans go out the window.
Carry a spare in whatever you carry

My personal preference, .45.
Ask any old battle experienced soldier, .45. Heck even my gun store owner guys say without hesitation, .45.

thats a tough question to answer, a 40 or 45, well for me its not about the size of the bullet but the placement or where you hit the target. no amount of bullet size will do if you can't shoot and aim correctly on the target

it boils down to whatever you shoot best...for me it's the 45ACP. The only exception being the Sig P229 - the only gun chambered in 40 that I really enjoyed...my Glock 35 was accurate and reliable but I hated the blocky grip and the fact that I had to buy a KKM barrel to shoot lead.
