200gr 45acp can be just as fast as 180gr 40S&W.

200 grain 45 +p's, while they pack a big punch, actually penetrate slightly less than standard velocity 230 grain. There's a LOT of energy, though.

Just sayin' is all.

That's why I use both.

It does get you thinking about the performance of the 40S&W compared to the 45acp though.

My choice is XD 45C or the new XDM.

The argument I've heard against the .45 is that it's a slow round, and that, at distance, the .40 is often more accurate.

The argument for the .45 is that it's been around forever, and it's a man's round. Mostly an emotional response (even though it is a bigger round, which I guess is the point).
Obviously, and as you can see, you won't get an answer that has much validity, without including emotion, unless you specificaly ask for non-emotional reasons and justification.

Yes, the 45 has been around forever. That's a testament to it's capability, and yes the 40 is, not so much, more accurate, but has a flatter trajectory over a longer distance.

With that said, keep in mind that most defensive situations are going to occur at distances where none of this really matters. If you're at a distance where the 40 is the better choice .... Turn and walk slowly away.

Both rounds are more than capable of stopping a threat if you do your part.

I'd suggest that you shoot each and go with what feels best.

Becaused based on the round and capacity .... The logical choice is an AR or AK with a full magazine.

So what is the real purpose for this caliber vs round count question ???
Based on a re-read .... It's gonna be your gun, so which do you want, and what's your intended purpose ??

This is correct according to that same article I mentioned, however, the man stated that he rarely saw cases where .357 was used in defensive or offensive shootings. Mostly his cases were bad guy against bad guy and were usually either 9mm or .38 special. He did say that over all .357 was the best at one shot kills simply because of its velocity causing a huge shockwave that in itself caused massive tissue damage even if it overpenetrated the target. Also, he said most suicides were done with larger caliber such as .44 mag or .357 mag due to certain statistics of age, occupation and gun ownership of the suicide victim.

His findings pointed him to .45acp because of its projectile being slow enough not to overpenetrate while dumping all of its energy into its target and the weight of the bullet being such that it had less tendency to deflect off of hard tissue and bone and go to its intended vital organ.

Well, sh!t... if we're going this route, the best choice for me would be .308/7.62x51mm (AR-10, M1A, FN Mk.17 SCAR-H, HK-417) with a full magazine!

The freakin' zombies won't stand a chance, YO!

I dont understand why the .45acp brings so much vitreal to a thread. Just mention .45acp and you get all sorts of hatred and seemingly jealous comments about it.

In all honesty, I see more 9mm, 10mm and .40S&W owners/supporters that are much quicker to brag and boast than I see out of .45acp owners.

.45acp owners/supporters usually are more quiet about their caliber until asked and are far more supporting of other calibers as another choice.

Why do we catch the brunt of the aggression?

As far as capacity goes, 16 rounds versus 14 rounds (XD45) isnt that much difference. 14 rounds versus 8 rounds? Thats different.

fixed it for you

I like the .40 because its different. I have a guy i work with who doesnt think you should have anything else besides a .45. I've seen holes, ive read ballistics comparison, and with the right rounds, i dont think there is enough difference for me to really care. I dont have a .45 yet, but i will, and i will have other calibers as well, but i kind of like my .40 just for the crap that it starts
