My wife shoots the Kahr MK9 (9mm) and really likes it..light trigger action and low recoil. Kahr makes a real quality piece

I agree with letting her pick her own out. I took my wife to the range. She hated my j frame, said it hurt her hand (airweight). She shot the Kahr 9 and baby glock among others. Her choice was the XDSC9. She is still very happy with her choice. (me too)

My .02 is more from a friends point of view than my own. My wife grew up hunting and shooting handguns, and though very small, only owned a SW 686 4" .357 when we met. Since she has never had a problem with recoil or noise, my experience comes from a friend. His wife had never fired a gun before, and he very little until purchasing his XD service 9mm. He fell in love and rapidly put 5-6 k rounds through it. His wife expressed interest; and so he bought a P22 Walther for her to learn with. She shot one mag through it, said she wanted to try his 9mm, and never gave it back! She even shot about 50 rounds through my XD 40 SC that day with no problems. She is about 5'1" tall and might weigh 100#. The XD just fit her well. Let your wife/GF try lots and pick what she shoots well. My friend's wife now routinely puts 2-300 round downrange in a session and never complains.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions fellas. We went looking for a Walther P22 this evening. It crossed my mind right after I posted as an easy training tool that could double as a good plinker. Gander Mountain and Academy Sports didn't have any in stock. I know of a couple other shops to check out in Little Rock before I give up. She liked the look of the P99. When we get to the range, I'll rent a P99 for her. A friend of mine just bought a Bersa .380 a couple weeks ago. Hopefully she'll find something she's comfortable with using. She's already told me she wants a semi-auto if we get anything.

Thanks again fellas! I'll report back with her likings

If you decide to get a Walther P99 be sure to try and track down one of the older ones imported by Interams. The Walthers coming out of the S&W shop are totaly POS with lousy quality control. IMO the Walther quality died when they merged business with S&W.

Does that rule out buying any brand new ones? The one we saw at Gander Mountain last night said Made in Germany on the receiver and the barrel. It said S&W yada yada near the muzzle on the right side of the slide. I'm assuming it will not say anything about S&W on the side of the gun if it's an older one. They wanted alot for it - $620. The ergonomics are sweet though.

I must disagree with this post, I have a SW99 which is S&Ws version of the P99 and it is a great gun. I dont see any lack of quality craftsmanship and I have never had any problems or malfunctions with it at all. Ergonomics are wonderful and it has a great factory trigger pull. Maybe I just got lucky and get a good one. But I do trust this gun enough that it was once my duty weapon. But like he said, these are all our own opinions, go with what feels right to her.

A lot of girls have a little trouble clearing autos and the XD is actually worse than most in this regard, because you have to grip it just right or you ain't moving that slide anywhere.

The Ruger Sp-101 is the most comfortable snub I, or my wife, have ever fired. Suggest you see if you can find your Missus one of these to try out.
These are very good reasons for a small revolver. That's the way I'd steer my wife until she became more comfortable and proficient with firearms.
