whats involved with porting a barrel
I have been concidering getting the EFK Fire Dragon ported barrel for my XD40SC but then I remembered I have a metal lathe/mill combo...so I was wondering what all would be involved in porting a barrel...
The EFK ported barrels are $180, but I noticed that XDPistols.com sells the Storm Lake barrel for $110, and I was thinking of getting the 4" one and porting the extra inch it has (simmilar to the EFK ones) From what I can tell I could just drill holes in the "extra" barrel and then just smooth any tear out... part of me makes me think this is extreemely stupid, but the other part of me thinks it could be a fun way to save $70...(Im always looking for an excuse to use my metal lathe/mill) |

I understand wanting to tinker so let help. Best results will come the holes so gas release will be angled slightly forward and you will have to insure that there is no burrs left inside the rifling. I'm not sure how you will do that. I think I would try slotting the top of the slide as opposed to the two edges this might help with the possible cracking mentioned. Take a look at the slide on a Glock G34/35 which has had the slide lightened. You might then be able to cut slots in the barrel as opposed to drilling holes. I'm sure if you google porting you will find other ideas used on non-XD guns.
Have fun
