Actually, if you went at ANY angle, it would have to be rearward facing.

If they angled forward then the effect would be the gasses pushing the gun AT the shooter, causing in effect MORE felt recoil. They would need to be angled rearward to have a small "pulling" effect to reduce felt recoil.

But porting is not done to reduce recoil, it is done to reduce muzzle flip.

Note the porting slots on the EFK Firedragon barrels are angled forward. If the slots are angled rearward the gases will tend to pass by the porting rather than exiting through the ports.
