Question XD 40 s&w Recoil

I originally bought my 40 Tactical after shooting a 40 service at a local range.
This service was all stock and dirty as hell- and was a friggin' tack driver.
-Recoil wasn't much more than the 9mm's I've shot. So here I am thinkin'
4" is pretty accurate- the 5" should be a step up- and this pistol will be for target and home defense. voila- I gets my 40 Tactical.
The weird thing is it seems my tactical kicks more than that service- both shooting WWB 165gr- and my tactical does'nt seem to have an accuracy edge- at least for me.
Anybody experienced this?

I don't like the 40cal round in any gun.
But that's just me...
My XD45 compact has less recoil than the XD40 I rented.
I prefer the 9mm or the 45acp.
My S&W 642 with 38sp +P, kicks more than any other pistol I own..

OOPS, I'm rambling, sorry..

makes no sense that it would recoil more in a heavier gun, trade it in and buy the m

Have someone else shoot both. Have them give you feedback on the recoil but don't tell them what you are feeling.

im not sure how this is happening but maybe it just need broke in a bit to correct the accuracy end.. and to help with the recoil maybe throw a dons fat stainless rod in.. may not help much but seems to a bit in my 45 tactical.

but as someone mentioned ..if i had a XD-40 it would get traded for an XDm

Thanks for replys fellas.
My shooting buddy noticed the same thing I have- he had previously rented that service and has since shot my tactical- after I've put about 1400 rounds throught it.
I was reading one the XD-M threads and it brought up an interesting point-
the guy had shot the XD-M and noted the recoil was slightly up from his 40 service. The service uses a captive double recoil spring compared to the straight single spring used in the tactical and the new XD-m.
This was suggested as possibly affecting felt recoil.
By the way- 1400 rounds and no stoppages- I'm pretty sure I'm gonna keep my tactical but the XD-Ms are growing on me.

I agree with you that the felt recoil between the two might be due to the recoil spring set-up in both guns. I went with a Don's guide rod and an assortment of springs on my tactical, give that a try.

i know you said it was all stock, but some things, like a spring change, might not be visibly apparent when shooting someone else's gun...

any chance that 4" had a different recoil spring? it has been said that a stronger spring might reduce the "snap" typically associated with the .40 round. i have a 22 lb spring in mine (stock is 18 IIRC). i would love to be able to tell you how it affected the snap, but i just don't remember. it was just too long ago.

any chance it had a tungsten guide rod, thus adding more weight to the front of the gun?

these two together might make enough of a difference to where a sensitive hand could feel the difference. it might not even be less recoil you felt, it might just be different than what you are feeling now and you perceive it to feel like less.
