Ok, so let me get this straight. When in normal operation for semi-automatic, the chambered round fires and then is ejected. The slide then begins to feed the next round BUT the ejector is not engaged on the case until after it slams into battery. Most if not all ejector arms are cut with a slant to allow this. So, this actually happens automatically everytime you squeeze the trigger, have a successful ignition, and reload a new cartridge.

Wrong AF. The round normally slides up into the extractor while the slide is back. The whole shooting match then is pushed into the chamber by the breech face. THE EXTRACTOR DOESN'T SLAM AROUND THE BRASS EVERY ROUND.
Take a look at your extractor, yes it's beveled for the occasional slam, but also notice the nice knife edge and how fragile it might be. Keep slamming it over the brass and you'll break it most certainly. Feed the round from the mag and drop the mag if you want to practice this. As for the FTE, the next round coming up keeps the brass in alignment and engaged with the extractor. Without this support, the brass is sliding down and off the extractor before it is ejected. Even with a properly tensioned extractor this could happen from all the recoil forces. One test when tuning a 1911 is to see if the extractor will hold a round in place without the mag. If not the extractor needs to be bent in a little. |

And why do we want to fire the gun without a magazine in it anyway?
It is a true fact that extractors are not meant to be slammed over a chambered round, especially solid extractors which are not spring loaded..... Wally

only time to fire without a magazine is like from Deja Vu, and you slip the round into the chamber and keep the slide locked open, and you throw the bad guy the magazine, and show him your gun, telling him you just want to talk. When he lets his guard down, hit the side lock lever, and kill bad guy

Because a gun should still be perfectly functional even without a magazine, IMO. In case, it's damaged or lost.

In California the Peace Nazis now require a magazine disconnect safety on any new model semiauto to be considered for DOJ list of Approved firearms.
