You carry a 1911 cocked but not locked with the safety? That's Con0. You are a braver man that I.

If there's not one in the chamber it's because the gun is locked in the safe.

Not having a round in the chamber makes it an unloaded weapon and an unloaded weapon is like an unflushed toilet!

If you're going to carry without one in the chamber, you might as well carry a baseball bat. You've got much more reach than if you were clubbing someone with an unloaded gun. It will hurt a hell of alot more. And you might get more satisfaction beating an attacker down than shooting one.
Just keep one in the chamber, even my friend who's not anti nor pro gun, understood, an attacker isnt going to let you have a time out and rack the slide when he's got a knife and is about to remove your testicles. It was his first time shooting this weekend, and he had alot of trouble racking the slide when the instructor was trying to get him to exhibit a cease fire on the line. He was under stress and really nervous being in that situation and struggled several times to get the slide back. That being said, who knows how you will react if someone is charging you with a knife or some type of weapon, do you really want to get hit with adrenaline and fear and emotion and have to worry about racking the slide? i think the answer is no. Keep it loaded with one in the chamber, draw, and shoot.

I keep 1 in the chamber in both my XD and P series.... The main reason i bought the XD (besides the feel in my hand) is the grip safety. I don't think i'd feel comfortable with a glock, b/c too much can go wrong when reaching for your gun in a stressful situation...
