well I dont have an answer for you but I just recently polished mine also... It looks really good with my stainless slide, but now I too am worried about rust. Gulf Coast and salt air humidity reak havoc on metals... Im hoping if I keep it oiled really well and use armadillo on it, rust will be prevented...

Macs (shootiniron.com) does it. I think around $12-16? Im having my slide and barrel done at the same time so I wouldnt have to worry about rust or anything anymore

Just leave it. It will probably wear off anyways. I had mine GunKoted and after 600 rounds its starting to wear off. Maybe you could do something harder like hard-chrome?

Ya its inevitable.. I figured for an extra $10 when its there to get it done isnt bad. That price I listed above includes polishing the ramp and chamber(or whatever part you see when the slide is shut

Yup, thats what I did. I was getting my slide and controls GunKoted so I said what the hell and did the barrel too. It did wear better than the factory finish, and even though its coming off, its not bad (it will protect from rust better than nothing).

You can have it plated, which will wear the slowest of anything, but it will eventually wear if you shoot the gun regularly.

I believe you don't have to worry so much about the barrel rusting. Most of the barrel is protected inside the slide, which means oil or protectant will tend to stay on it much better. It's also protected somewhat from the elements as well.

The only thing really exposed is the breech block, and I haven't had mine rust once yet.

I think you are over reacting a bit to the whole rust problem. THe one time my XD had any signs of rust I was able to take it off with a towel and some oil.

I had one of my Steyr barrels coated with a NP3 finish and have been disapointed with the finish on the barrel. Around the locking block where it contacts the slide the finish is starting to chip off. I think a Hard chrome would be good choice. I would look at Tripp Research for a great chrome finish.
