My First First Time Shooting An XD.
Good day. I had a chance to shoot an XD9 for the first time this weekend. My friend bought one recently and loves it. I love how the gun feels in my hands but was disappointed at how well I grouped my shots with it. We had a Ruger P94 there too (Which I have never liked shooting), but I shot better with it!
Is it that I just have to get used to shooting a polymer, or could it be my friends XD just needs some adjustments (All shots seem to group lower left quadrant). I am think of getting an XD soon, but I am concerned about how well I will shoot with it. Please advice. |

Lower left is extremely typical of a right handed shooter, you just need to practice your trigger pull.

Very true. Whenever I get in too much of a rush and start getting sloppy with my trigger technique all of my shots go low and left. If you shoot it again try a nice consistent pull.

Practice your pull. Most start out shooting low and left, as stated above. Lighten and shorten the trigger. (Powder River Precision)

I've had mine for about a month (XD9 Service). At first I was left and low, and as I've practiced those shots have come back to the middle. Trigger control was the issue.
Also, as the trigger has smoothed out, it's been easier to get a smooth trigger break. In fact, I think I'll go do some dry firing right now.

+1 on proper grip. My groups would be messed up for a mag or two whenever I switched between XDs and non-XD pistols.

i just picked up my XD9 Service a week ago, it seems all my shots go low and left. this is what happened usually when i went to the range and rented random hand guns from them. im assuming this means its not my gun, because it would have been every other gun too. I guess this means (right handed shooter) that my trigger pull isnt good yet?

the trick is to squeeze the trigger without disturbing the sight alignment. Assuming right handed, pulling to the left is indication the trigger is being pulled too hard at the last second and pulling the gun slightly left. What I'd advise is to sit down, make sure the gun is unloaded, look down the sights and work on keeping those sights stable as you squeeze the trigger, over and over. If you see the sights twitch to the left slightly when you use the trigger, thats the problem. What would be better is to use snap caps so you have the real feel of the trigger when youre actually using it at the range.
I did this myself and I feel it helped me a lot.

You can "dry fire" the XD to your hearts content without worry, just keep live ammo far far away.
