Noticed this when I was cleaning my XD-9 Sub. Bought it new in April and shot about 100 rounds of standard factory ammo. I do not know if it is a crack or just a flaw. I sent this picture off to Springfield customer service but have not heard back. Any advice would be welcome. Is it safe to shoot?

I know that's a really tight space, but could you run something thin over that to feel it out. Based on your picture it appears to run from the face through to the bottom of the slide. The fact that it doesn't run parrellel to the normal marks makes it suspect. I don't suppose you could run a crayon over it then wipe it clean to see how much remains in the "crack".

To me, based on the pictures it looks like a deep scratch, not a crack. It looks too wide, whereas with most cracks it has the look of a single strand of hair laying on the metal. And often a crack will go all the way across the face of the metal piece, but that's not always true. But that's just my two cents. Either way I'm sure SA will help you straighten it out.

I think it is a "normal" machining mark that occurred when that side of the breech face was flared at the bottom. The mark parallels the flare and I don't think the shallow mark will cause any problems. You dont want rough horizontal tooling marks near the midline (in line with the firing pin hole) as that could interfer with smooth chambering. That mark is well off to the side and nearly vertical, so it won't snag the rounded rim of the round. The flare prevents the case rim from catching on the edge of the slide and helps guide the round as it slides up the breech face as the round is chambered. My XD-9 SC has a similar flare. Mine does not have that mark, but if it did, I would not be concerned about it. I definitely would not try and file/polish the mark away, as you do not want to remove material there as it supports the casing during firing. My opinion is that you are good to go, but you can wait for Springfield to chime in if you want to be sure.

Thanks, Wild Rice for replying. The gun shoots well and I have had no problems with it.
