Considring another XD purchase...
I bought my first firearm this past January. My XD 4" Service. I have learned on it, upgraded it with the powder precision replacement safety lever, put a lasermax in it, and use a crossbreed to carry it IWB. It has been fantastic.
I find myself burdened with shuttling it back and forth and making sure it's in the right place on days that I am not going to be able to carry due to local laws. I need a backup gun anyway so that I'm not left completely unarmed if this one breaks. I think I want to use my current 4" as my car/carry piece that I primarily store in my car. Get a second one to stash in my bedroom as home defense and range/competition toy. Since I want be carrying it primarily, however I could since it will be compatible with my crossbreed. So I'm thinkig 5" XD, getting a SS match barrel from one of the forum supporters, and a heavy SS guiderod, get the fully powder precision trigger kit springs and all, and a rail mounted light. I saw a full black one today at the gun shop/range I goto with Trijicon night sights on it already for $585. I've seen a 5" at a gunshow for as cheap as $515 but without the Trijicon sights... 9mm The benefit in another XD, same platform, not entirely relearning. Whatcha think. These are my last two weeks shooting results with my 4" XD. I still need some better skill myself, but think the 5" will give better groupings? 50foot results: WWB Ranger SXT, carry ammo |

Is the one you have a 9mm? I have a XD45ct and a XD9t, I got the 9mm because it's cheaper to shoot than the .45 and since they're both Tacticals, it makes it easy switching between them.
If you have a service, maybe another service in a different caliber . . .

Since you already have a 4 inch, you should keep that at home and get a XD9sc to carry... It'll be smaller, prints less, and with the 16rnd extended mag, you can have 10 rounds when you want to conceal, or 16 when you leave it in your car or what not...

As to getting a 9mm, nothing wrong with that. I picked up an XD9 for practice as it is cheaper to reload for than my XD45.

The 5" isn't going to give you any better groups, unless you just happen to like the feel of it that much more. It is technically inherently more accurate due to the longer sight radius but most people don't see immediately better accuracy because of that alone. It is all about practice and getting used to the gun and your technique.
BTW, I second the idea of keeping your Service for HD/Range and getting a SC for carry.

I'd go with an XD9SC.
