difference between xd and xd-m

Hey gang,
I been trying to figure out what all the hoopla is about with the xd-m.?
I looked at what pics I could find. Other than the squarish look of the xd and the interchangeable back straps of the xd-m is there any other real difference ?
Anybody got a good site for me to get some better specs ?
Thanks
Jack

Almost like saying what's the difference between a Cobalt and a Z06... both made by the same company, both are very different platforms.

I cannot wait till they release an XDM-C... I'll be all over it. I'm glad they went with the replaceable backstraps... I love that feature on my newer HK pistols!

Is the XDM replacing the current XD, or will it be another model in the line?

No sir. Tom Gresham talked to Springfield about this, and they said the original line of XD's will remain.

Are the 12-round magazines interchangeable with the 16-rounders or are they too short to properly fit? I'm wondering based on the idea of having a regular XD in the house with the new model, grabbing the wrong magazines out of the case on the way to the range and being stuck with non-functioning magazines.
