That is odd I would talk to Springfield about it because if I understand right that piece shouldn't have much if any pressure on it. But don't give up on the XD yet this sounds like a fluke. Oh yea and I don't think its "common".

Sounds like it was probably a bad Striker Spring Guide, there is pressure on the guide where it meets and is held in by the Striker Locking Plate. If the Guide breaks that would cause the Striker Spring to bend inside the slide since there is no support against the Locking Plate.

Buy a new Striker Spring Guide and new Striker Spring or send it back to SA.

I wouldn't let it leave a bad taste in your mouth. I haven't heard of the XD having this problem. Just sounds like the guy behind the counter is a Cock fan I mean Glock fan! MY BAD
