GotXD, I understand. I carry a XD45 Service most of the time but my IWB holster does not work at all when driving so when I will be traveling for more than 30 minutes (I live 2 miles from work and all the local sores are within a 5 mile radius of my home) I strap on my 1911. I like both pistols but if it came to the 'you can only have one gun' game, I would have a very hard time between the 1911 and XD. Good Luck and enjoy!

Get what feels right and shoot it well. If it doesn't work out for you, get another XD.
I picked up a Taurus PT145 and love it. It's my carry piece and it's very comfortable. That being said, I am not giving up my XD 45 Tactical.

If you are not going with a "higher end" 1911 from Springfield, I would recommend the MilSpec over the GI .45 that you mentioned. The MilSpec offers a several improvements over the GI, one of which is no lanyard loop, which I don't think would be desirable on a carry weapon.
