Break In Period Questions

Just got my XD9 Service yesterday, put 50 rounds through it. I've got 200 more rounds in my safe right now. Got my tax return yesterday, and get paid this friday. Safe to say i'm probably going to put atleast another 200 rounds through it this weekend. Now, so far the ammo im running hasnt had a problem, dont imagine it will cause one. I heard I should put 250 to 500 rounds of standard FMJ ammunition through my gun, before i start trying out JHP ammunition. Then, not to trust any type of JHP ammunition for carrying/self defense purposes until you've fired atleast 200-250 rounds of that type/brand of ammunition through your gun.

Is there any truth to this? What am I getting wrong and what am I getting right? Thanks alot guys, still learning from you folks every day.

you wont need to fire 200-250 rounds of JHP to "qualify" that ammo. Thats ridiculously expensive. I think most people shoot 50 at most to qualify a JHP for your gun

I don't think that's 100% accurate. The XD should be fine for either pretty much right out of the box. All I've ever done was clean mine before shooting, shot 100 WWB FMJ, and then put HPs through it to make sure there are no hang ups. The only break in period I've experienced mostly pertains to the trigger loosening up.

My basic rule is not to trust a gun with my life until it's had about 350 to 500 rounds through it with no problems, during this period fire off about 50 to 100 of the hollow points that you'll be carrying for self defense, if all goes without a hitch, you're good to go. Most importantly though is to keep your XD clean, or any weapon for that matter.

The more carry ammo you can shoot before you trust it, the better. IF you can afford 200-250 rounds of defensive ammo, then go for it. Most cannot, and would shoot a box or two to qualify it as reliable. I try to shoot the ammo out of all my mags until they are dry to try to ensure that the ammo will not have any issues with what I carry.

So from what I understand its really preference? There is no written in stone way of knowing if youre gun will take a certain type of JHP, or any type of ammo for that matter, other than firing it. I might pick up 2 boxes this weekend, or maybe i'll hold off for another 2 weeks or so. I applied for my LTCF last week, so I should be able to concealed carry in about 2 to 3 weeks. I guess I can wait on test firing JHP's, but i just wanted to collect some info on it, from someone other than the gun dealer.

Nope, at the last minute she decided against it. She said she knew i was right and that getting a tattoo with no meaning at the spur of the moment was a stupid idea, but she just didnt want to give in too easily to my "demands". Even though I was just looking out for her .. We're going to sit down and plan it out for when she goes to get it her shoulder piece done.

I did notice accuracy improvements after passing the 250-300 round mark. 2 FTF's with WWB though (.40 S&W)

I;ve put 600 rounds of WWB through with no failures and probably 50 rounds of golden saber jhp +p with no failures. i noticed at the 150-200 range my trigger and slide loosened to a comfortable point and nothing has changed since. racking before this point needed more effort than I was used to, not that it was a problem. after that racking feels smooth as does the trigger break.

I am thinking of switching from golden saber to speer gold dot +p, but the cost of ammo has me waiting since i'll end up buying 100rounds in 1 shot(50 to test and 50 to keep for SD). either gotta wait for another gun show to roll through or buy online.
