This is the same equation we had concerning the "bear backup",just a different animal. Stopping potential depends on: 1) diameter, weight, construction and velocity of the bullet. 2) your shot placement and distance. Your target's potential for getting you before you get him: 1) HIS diameter, weight, construction, distance and determination to HURT you.Sooo.......what does this all mean? The biggest potent caliber you can HANDLE and SHOOT well, preferabley a revolver.(generally six guns don't have feed problems, stove pipes and if you have failure to fire you just pull the trigger again) With that being said, the .40 is not a very good choice.Yes it is capable IF all is just right, but not by much.Plus you have all the reliability issues that could happen at the most critical time.So what is better suited? .44 mag.,hot loaded .45 Colts,.454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .500 S&W etc. These all have heavy constructed bullets with the "horsepower"behind them. Other calibers MAY do the trick, but you are betting your life they will.Don't under estimate these tough animals. They can hurt you big time if they really want to.Best to have more than enough than too little.Hope all works out. P.S.....back-ups are not for"that last ditch effort".They are the "finality"to something that went wrong or not as planned. They are the "closers".........Herman.

I was just kidding about carrying one "Mexican". OEFM carries one in an ankle holster though. Peace, D.
