recommendations for socal gunsmiths to install night sights
Socal xd owners,
Which gunsmiths do you recommend that have installed night sights on your xd? I just bought an xd subcompact and I want to get trijicon night sights and have them installed. I have read that some gunsmiths were able to remove the front factory sight off the xd so I want to aviod this problem. I am located in the 626/909 area code. Thanks in advance. |

There really isn't anyone here who can tell you if your local gunsmith is going to have trouble replacing your sights. Find someone nearby with a good rep and let em go at it.

If you'd consider mailing off your slide for the work.....
It's easy and safe. Ajamesp51 has probably taken off and re-installed as many sights on XDs as anyone in the country. He put a set of Meprolights on my Sig for me and it was very painless. I know he's done bunches of XDs for members here. Turnaround time was around a week. His prices are good, sight installation is free if you buy from him. http://www.xd-hs2000.com/sights.html bd |

Im in the same boat as you USP.. I live in Socal. Yesterday I called four smith in OC and not one of them had even heard of the XD. One guys said "Yeah, we work on all springfield .45's, bring it in: when I told his it wasnt a 1911 he laughed and said "Sir, the only handgun springfield would ever make is a 1911. They dont fool around with that plastic stuff"
I chuckled...

Alright then,
trijicon vs. meprolight? Are they good quality as in they won't fall out, which one is better at night, which one is good in the day as well? Thank you. |

Sir,
Have you considered King's in Glendale? They are expensive, but they are very good. I have taken quite a few pistols in there and they have all come out great. If not interested in that, Sharpshooter in Torrance has a pistolsmith who seems to know what he is talking about. I never took my stuff there, but I would not hesitate to in the future. JSR |

I will tell you one not to go to in the "old" 909 area that is now 951. Danforths. They were going to charge me $100 to fix my 30-30 lever action due to a jam with 2 rounds in the MAG.
Turned out it was 2 screws in the receiver in the wrong holes that caused the jam. The rounds came out fine and the gun works fine. Cost: 0 from Gunslinger in Glendora. I bought the gun from him at his auction, I just didn't want to drive the distance. You might call Jeff at Gunslingers, tho I'm not sure he does that type of work. He is honest and I'd trust him to do work on my gun (I did). 626-914-7010 |

Since the sight vial has a larger diameter, Meprolights are supposed to be easier to "spot" with in low light situations. I have a set on one of my XD's. "TrickyJohns" have the reputation of LE and Military use. You couldn't go wrong with either brand. As far as having them installed, unless you have a stainless model, it would be more cost effective for you to have your slide refinished at the same time. The sights would have to be removed anyway so the refinisher would already be getting paid whether he puts on the original or new sights. It should cost around $80-$85 + shipping to refinish a slide and some places might charge as muck as $45 to change your sights. Some places will tell you free installation if you buy the sights from them, but you can bet that you are paying for it in the retail price already.
