Springfield went after the Army's contract bid for a new sidearm. One of the Requirements was that the sidearm have a thumb safety.

Damien in Seattle I don't list my guns - I know glocks, FALs, and AKs but I'm not sure my ability to fill a gunsafe with guns make me an expert on anything. All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting. |

It's only for the 45, that sucks because i'd love a 9mm SC with the safety.

While I agree that a thumb safety isn't necessary on this gun (given the safety features that are built in to the gun) I find it comforting to know that with the thumb safety on that even with the trigger pulled the gun can not fire. In fact, that was one of the reasons that my first pistol was a Beretta 92FS. I can decock the hammer and put the gun on safe with one still in the chamber. Again, not needed but comforting to have if you want it.
