Personally I think the biggest thing they did was fix the magazine problem the XD-40 had. Since the original XD-40 was built on the XD-9 frame the magazines had the same internal width, just with 40S&W width feed lips as the 9mm magazines. This resulted in a magazine without a true double stack and capacity was limited. The new XD-M is build to accept correct magazine for 40S&W thus the capacity is increase to 16rds instead of 12rd of the original XD-40.

The picture below illustrates what happens when a 9mm width magazine as 40S&W loaded in it as in the XD-40.

ETA: Every time I post the XD-40 magazine issue I feel like a broken record.

I'd say if you have much over $650.00 you're giving too much money.

I'm looking to get a .40 pistol, so I rented a few the other day. M&P, Glock 23 & XD Service Model. I have a Glcok 19 that I love and shoot very well. The G23 was not as comfortable due to recoil, the M&P & XD handeled recoil much better. I shot well w/ the M&P, but the grip didn't fit me as well as the XD, and I couldn't try all the grips on the M&P. The M7P trigger was tough. I shot very well with the XD.

Anyway, I like the grip, fit and feel of the XD. How does the grip compare on the XD(M). Is the grip the same width and height as the XD (I know it has a different texture). If the XD(M)'s grip is any thicker or longer it won't work for me. Any help is great.

It seems some people don't really understand the XD-M. It is not replacing the XD. You will still be able to get the same XD's you got before. It has the modular grips, a Match grade barrel, better disassembly, lower profile sights, and a lower profile slide (more rounded) along with better recoil management. I concede it will need to be proven, just like any new gun, but some of these features should make it easier to conceal and draw form a holster and maybe a better defensive weapon. It also holds 16 rounds of .40 rather than 12 which I can't see as a bad thing. Every one has their opinion about the styling but it seems they have made and honest, non gimmicky attempt to improve on an already excellent gun. Im guessing some of the opinions spewed on this forum are similar to all the glock fans comments about the XD's when they first came out and they are now a great, proven gun. I trust Springfield knows what they are doing and I have no reason to think there will not be a market for this. In fact, with the passing of time, if it proves to be as reliable, I might trade in my XD40 tactical for it.

Aesthetics aside, does any one have a legitimate gripe about the acutal changes to functionality that were made? You can still have the same ergonomics of the original XD grip, but you have the option to change it if a change suits you better. Big freakin deal.

I'm with you.
I'm surprised at the negativity that is being "spewed" (as you aptly put it) about this gun.

I see a number of real-life improvements to the gun too.
There's not a whole lot you can do to a GREAT gun like the XD.
The grip (as I understand it) is a different material than the current XD, and while it does look different, it's the ONLY thing that I could see some having a problem with aesthetically.
Others will like it.
If it had the same grip as the older models, I think everyone would be singing it's praises, since the slide is more "melted" now and the other features have real merit too.

If I were shooting a .40 service or tactical, I would most likely be getting in on the first round.

While they won't likely admit it, how much ya wanna bet that a fair number of the poo-poo mongers here will buy one of these guns later...?

Hey Moose, we're like 10 miles from each other. You ever shoot anywhere in BG at a range? I mostly shoot in the country here in Allen County but thought about going to fireline (I think is the name of it) on Shives lane.

Thanks! I heard that a couple dealers up your way already had them. My dealer called today, but he only had the "all black" version. I'm holding out for the Bi-Tone. I'll try to sneak it up that way.
