In NY you can't take your XD to the range without a Pistol Permit. You can't even possess it. Luckily, this is a question of Utah state law since you live in Utah. So go to the Utah firearms law and look up the answer. If in doubt contact the Utah State Police and/or the Utah Attorney General's office. Trust first hand source documents (the law) or officials closest the the first hand source documents before you trust Net knowledge.

Here in michigan if you need a copy of the gun laws, you need only to contact the State Police. I would imagine that follows as such for there in Utah. YOu may even be able to find those regulations in the DNR paperwork as well. You could also probably find the information thru the NRA.

as far as i know in WI you arent allowed to have any ammo inside the case with the gun. (an issue similiar to this came up in one of my classes and my teacher, a police chief, said that one of the students was carrying his shotgun illegally because he had a side saddle with shells on it.) when ever im transporting a gun in my car, i have it in the trunk and have the ammo under the seat. again, like everyone else has said, you'll want to check your state laws

As stated above, all states are different. In WA you can have an unloaded handgun in your car without a permit. A loaded handgun in the car requires CCP.

Specifically, when I transport my XD can I have the two magazines that are also in the case loaded with ammo so long as neither mag is in the weapon? The laws seem a bit vague here...

I would say that you could get a lot of different answers, it all depends on the state you live in. In Louisiana you do not need a CCL because the vehicle is considered an extension of your home, and so you can legally carry with a mag in the gun and a chambered round... I don't know how it is in Utah.

I live in louisiana also, and yea we get to carry it anywhere in the car loaded... I keep mine loaded in my glove box, but take it out and put it between the center console and seat when i drive home late at night....

In Michigan, if you dont have a cpl, the gun must be in a case and locked up with ammo in seperate area from the gun. The gun must be in the back of the vehicle as well. Glad I dont have to worry about that anymore.

This is a great reference book and will answer almost all your questions for all 50 states. There are so many different rules and regs and definitions from state to state, I don't travel without it.
