Newbie. New XD 4" Service 9mm. Trying to learn to shoot better.

I've been reading about trigger grittiness (there's a recent thread about it), but I can't find where it's described. I'm wondering if I have that issue.

I was practicing dry-firing today and trying to get the trigger to surprise me when it breaks. As I draw back the trigger, it's not smooth--it moves, then almost catches on something, moves a bit more, then finally breaks.

Is that the grittiness people are speaking of?

Can I expect that to get better as I fire more rounds (or do more dry-firing), or is my only recourse to get a smith to replace the offending parts?

I guess it's a sign of improvement that now I'm starting to be concerned with how the trigger breaks. At the start, it was all I could do, it seemed, to get the sights to line up.

Yes. Like dragging your fingernail on sandpaper vs. wet glass.

Yes. Over time the metal against metal will polish itself. But you can help it get there sooner with a multitude of polishing techniques.

Have you tried cleaning it yet? I had some grittiness, turned out to be dirt.

Clean everything very well and oil it up good as well. My Walther P22 had a gritty trigger and slide release. I lubed up the trigger mechanism, and took apart the slide release and oiled that up as well. Now it's very smooth.

Running a good 1500 rounds through it didn't hurt, either...

Both my XDs smoothed up pretty quick curtesy of shoot clean repeat.

Do you have to dissasemble anything besides removing the slide to do this work?

I have cleaned it, each time after I shot it, but I'm not sure I did as much as I could w/r/t the trigger mechanism.

I'm a little nervous about taking much more apart than the basic field strip, but I think I'll do some more cleaning around the trigger mechanism.

You may want to look down the hole at the sear and striker as you slowly pull the trigger. I could see when I pulled the trigger really slow the striker tab would studder up the sear until it fired. I cleaned up the sear, safety, ejector with wet 400 and 600 and did a little bit polishing on the striker tab and now it runs extremely smooth. I did just a little bit at a time and tried it until I had all the offending parts working nicely.

Good tips on the other thread to do all of this.
