Buying in Texas
Currently living in Texas on military orders (PCS) and want to buy a handgun. I have not changed my residency due to the fact that I am in the guard and will be going back to Ohio when I'm done with training. I have been told that you have to be a resident to buy handguns in Texas. Anyone know the rules for Texas, I googled and have only found rules on concealed carry laws. Thanks in advance.
BTW, great forum. I have been looking around for a handgun for a friend and just have to have a XD45! |

Yep, not going to work for you. I actually moved from Ohio recently and still had my OH driver's license---I just hadn't gotten around to getting a TX one. The gun shop went all leery on selling to me, and I had to get a TX license to buy. Actually... it's good they did that, I still wouldn't have gotten it done if they hadn't been strict...
But yeah, no good. They might accept military ID that lists a local address, but I don't know. |

For some strange reason, I thought if you were in the military, you were able to purchase a firearm where you happen to be stationed. I could very well be wrong on this.

I was able to buy an AR a few months ago, but they said they couldn't sell a handgun to me. I can't understand why a set of orders and a military ID won't count.
Anyone know the rules in OK, I'm pretty close to the border. Like I said, I gotta have that XD45! |

I recently bought an XD Tactical 357 sig here in Utah but I still don't have a Utah license since moving here over a year ago from Florida. The rules here are that it's OK for shotgun and rifle to sell to out of state but you must be a resident for handguns.
I went to the DMV to get the license but was told that NYS had a problem from back when I lived there. I figured out that I'd neglected to send back the license plates to NYS after moving to Florida and they didn't like that. I was able to get a state issued ID card and that was acceptable for handgun purchase and I was able pick up my new toy in less than a week after ordering it. I should be able to get my Utah license this coming week as I've finaly satisfied the DMV gods in Albany and i should now be free to get my new license. I'll also be registering my motorcycle this week so I can put it back on the road. My car (2004 Toyota Matrix) gets pretty good mileage with an average of 28C/33H, but the motorcycle is more like 40C/47H so that will be nice to have with gas going towards $4/gal and maybe even $5/gal this summer. I don't recall seeing any exclusions for military folks. You must be a resident of Texas to buy a handgun in Texas. I think that applies to any state.
ATF Online - Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms I think the rules for residency vary but check with DPS. I think it's living here for six months and having a TX driver's license. It's not tied to your homestate.

I was told that I couldn't because I wasn't a resident (at Gander Mountain)...

I believe that if you are a non-resident, all you will need to do is provide a copy of your orders that station you in Texas. Can someone confirm this?

Cool thing about Texas is that they have this 'Texas ID' thing. It's a state ID that'll let you buy a gun, but you won't have to do the hassel of transferring your Driver's License.
You can get it at any DMV.
