The XD extractor

This is the only REAL complaint I have on the XD. It seems to be VERY hard to fix yourself - unlike most other pistols, where you can DIY in minutes. What was GAINED by making it so hard????

Yep what was wrong, why did it take you so long to fix whatever you did?

I tend to agree, it is ridiculously difficult to remove an XD extractor and I am not a big fan of fixed extractors. Nearly every modern autoloader uses a pivoting (spring loaded) extractor which is much more tolerant of variances in brass size and holds a more constant tension.

Just my opinion.

The extractor is not hard to remove. The XD DVD by AGI shows a great and simple trick to remove it. Physics is your friend.

OK

First you have to disassemble the slide. Then, I've heard PLENTY of people here had trouble. Again, what was gained by SA making it so hard? (I guess it is just a dumb design).

I find it kinda simple. If you want complex, try on some of that Western European engineering.

What is causing you such problems?

That would engender a pointless semantic debate over the definition of the worrd "hard", but it is a pain in the ass to remove.

And we know all about the "pry" trick, I wonder if you know it doesn't usually work especially if the thing is wedged in tight. The only way to get mine loose was as follows:

I made a "J" hook tool out of HARDENED steel wire, so it had a small hook at the end about .020" in length with about 2" free wire end. I grabbed the free end with vise-grip pliers, and carefully set the hook under the extractor near the pivot end. Then I hang the slide upside down by the wire over a soft towel and rap down on the slide rails with the plastic end of a screwdriver until the extractor pops free (slide falls to the towel).

It's a friction/spring load fit and the black oxide coating is rough and acts to lock it in place. I polished the surfaces on mine, but it still fits in TIGHT and requires a sharp POP to get it to release, using my home made slide hammer.
