Safe to hit slide release when empty?
I love hitting the slide release button to load in the first round; feels nice and crisp. Hitting the slide release when the gun has no magazine in it or the magazine is empty, however, gives off that loud metal *slap* noise, and feels a little violent. Is this hurting/wearing out the gun? Any problems with doing this?

I highly doubt doing so is even close to as voilent as what the slide and frame go through when an actual round is fired and the slide slams back and then forward.

Releasing the slide like that, won't hurt it. Actually, if you listen carefully, you can hear XD saying "Yeah baby! Slap me some more!". |

According to gunsmiths and most manufactureres, it is advised against doing so when there is no round going in to cushion the impact of the extractor.

It's not recommended to drop you slide while the gun is empty. Dropping it while chambering a round is no problem.

It's also called a slide stop. After doing this for a while, you can wear out the slide and/or slide stop and then it won't lock open at all. Other than that, I can't see that it's good for it, but I can't see that it's bad. And if it is, how bad can you break a piece of steel.

I have a S&W model 59 that hasn't worn out the slide or slide top. I've had it for over 20 years. My service XD is 4 years old thousands of round no wear on the slide top or slide.
