Looks about right. Actually there is a graphic in the XD manual. If you don't have one, you can get it on-line at the Springfield Armory web-site.
The thing about fixed sights is there really is no such thing as a perfect sight picture...at least not in my opinion. Different ammo will impact the target differently. Different distances will of course also affect you point of impact. So even if your sight picture puts you dead center with "brand X" ammo at distance "Y" it won't necessarily do you much good without compensating when you change distance or ammo. Also, the closer the distance your sights are zeroed, you will have accuracy with less leeway. Parallax becomes more of a factor the closer the target. The farther away your sights are zeroed (to a point.....a pistol is not a rifle, so you would not zero your sights at 100 yards), the more "range" you should have. I think a pistol that is zeroed at 25 feet should give you good accuracy at practical ranges, which would be say 10 feet to 40 feet, or somewhere around there. Closer than 10 feet, which is really where you would likely use the gun in self defense may not be great as far as your sights, but at that distance and in a life or death situation you are unlikely to be lining up your target with the sights. Just point and pull the trigger. So really the sights for most of us are used to shoot paper targets and not used for self defense. My opinion only, and I am sure others will disagree. I practice at close range using a silhouette target and not using the sights at all. For target shooting, I use adjustable sights. They are the only way you can really hit bulls-eyes at different distances and with different ammo. Also, it seems like a majority of shooters don't take into account (or understand) the ballistic characteristics of the rounds they use. They are usually published, but it takes the effort to look it up. They are not usually on the box. . I don't know how many casual shooters ever give this any consideration. How much will a bullet rise or fall at what distances from the muzzle? Peace, D.

Good post by Delija.
Your sight picture is correct ShawnB. Putting the round on target requires more than a good sight picture, the way you pull/squeeze the trigger and the way you grip the gun make a huge difference.

115gr. shoots low for me, while the 124gr. is right on.

Actually, while that is a correct sight picture. I'm pretty sure it's not what is referred to as the "6 O'clock hold". The picture is illustrating a "center mass" hold, which is a perfectly fine sight alignment.
The "6 O'clock hold", as I understand it, perches the target on top of the front sight post, like a lollipop. There is also the "line of white" hold, in which you lower the sights just enough to see a line of the white target between the bullseye and the top of the front sight post. All 3 of these sight pictures are completely valid, it's just important to find the one that works best for you and be consistent about it. Do folks a different impression of the 6 O'clock hold than this? This terminology is what the Service Rifle shooters around here use, and I thought they were more or less standard. Mike

the pressure you apply through your grip DO make a difference, but you wont notice it untill about 15yrds.

Thanks guys (and gals if you responded). I just got back from an indoor range and shot very well, lots of bullseyes and other good shots. I was shooting at 7 yard, 10 yards, and ocassionally 15 yards. Always stayed on the target. Practice, practice, practice.
I wouldn't think I'd be shooting defensively over 10 yards. Heck probably not anymore than 10 to 15 feet. Hopefully, I never have to shoot a bg. Anyway....had a great day at the range. |
