slide shutting forward after last round...?
I recently took my XD 9mm out to the range hoping to impress my brother with my recent purchase. We traded off through 100 rounds of WWB 115g. As I was shooting I came up to the last round of the magazine and after the shell ejected the slide shut forward. It did this more than once while we were at the range. He commented how he didnt like that it was doing that and obviously I wasn't happy either. Has anyone else had any kind of problem like this?
Now I do know that I keep my thumb in the lip below the slide release but I'm pretty sure that I dont keep my thumb up high enough to be pushing or pulling down the slide release. I work out of town and cant experiment with my firearm at this time but that is the only explanation I have for the slide releasing forward unless the firearm is actually malfunctioning. Any thoughts? |

Does the slide lock open with an empty mag in the gun when you manually retract it?

Does it only do it with a certain Mag? The problem might be with the magazine not the gun.

+1......if it does that, then you know it's probably your thumb getting in the way. I did this when I tried out a higher thumbs forward grip on the frame. It's very easy to do....and not realize that you're doing it.

Another posibility is your grip--if you have a weak grip or limp wrist the gun it is possible to have the slide retract enough to eject a case but not enough to engage the slide stop.

Either way I will have to check my magazines over again and see if something is going wrong there. |

It happens to me if I'm careless since i shoot thumbs high. One of the drawback to having the slide release in a easy to reach spot is that you can inadvertently keep it pressed down when shooting preventing it from locking back.

I almost guarantee that one of your thumbs was lightly touching the slide release lever. I was sure it was my gun that was causing this after I moved to a thumbs-forward style of grip for competition. But I eventually realized that it was my right thumb that was very lightly touching the release. Once I trained myself to stop doing this, the problem went away.
