Cool Newbie needs facts

I posted this under the introductions forum.. i will post it here for direct feedback. Please provide as much fact with your opinions.. Thanks in advance.. (If this has already been posted somewhere...kindly redirect me)

Can you folks provide some real "fact" pros and cons for each caliber 9mm and .40S&W? I may also consider the .357 SIG and .45ACP models as well.
I am only interested in the service 4" models.

I plan to rent each one just so I can see how they shoot and which feels more comfy.

-I will be using for SD/HD. Will soon use for CC.
-Probably will be doing a lot of range time and training time with Guard drills.
-Cost of ownership
-HD safety - I dont wanna be putting bullets in and out of a bad guy just to injure a family member or neighbor upon exiting the bad guy.
-Any other pertinent info that would help my decision.

9mm is cheaper ammo especially for the range
cal. doesn't really matter if you can't hit what your shooting at
if you want something exclusively for home defense get yourself a Remington 870 tact. Any bad guys coming through hear that chik chik of the 12ga and don't run are either deaf or just dumb.

my .02 cents

The main reason I picked the 9SC was the price of ammo and it hides real well for CC. If you are built right and get a good holster you might be able to hide the service model.

9mm bullets = teh cheep

.40 has a smaller capacity compared to the other calibers. If you plan on hitting with the first/second/third shot, that's not an issue, but if you're likely to miss a lot or shoot until the threat stops, you may want a higher capacity. (This is completely moot if you live in Cali, where you're capped at 10 rounds no matter what.)

I drive a 9mm 4" Service. Works well so far.

I've always wondered if the racking sound actually had a deterrent factor, or if that was an urban legend.

Especially since I've been looking at videos of the Winchester SX3 with glazed eyes!

I chose the 9MM Service model for self defense/range use. I can get cheap ammo for the range, and the good stuff for defense. I'll also get in enough practice with the 9mm, that I'll be able to hit what I'm shooting at.

I've been very happy with it so far--but anyone care to post prices of cheap .40 or .45 for comparison to 9mm @ ~$19/100?

You will get a million opinions on this...here is mine:

9MM is my choice as me and my wife are at the range a lot and burn through ammo, and with the right ammo choice it has plenty of stopping power for home defense....but the main reason I like 9MM is the cost per shot.

.40 WWB (winchester white box) about 27.00/100 at Wallmart. (California)

I have a .40 5" and enjoy shooting it. I have 250-300 rounds through it.

This was my first pistol and I shoot my friends 9mm better. (bought 750 rounds a few weeks ago, will try and correct this )

limited to 10 rounds where I am so the .40 it was.
