If you have or think you soon will have more guns in different calibers, then go ahead and get a universal kit.

For now get the Hoppes Bore-Snake Field Kit for your 40. It can be worn right on your belt at the range or when hiking/camping and it has room for more boresnakes as your collection grows. Comes with a bottle of solvent and a bottle of oil plus a couple of wipes for the exterior.
When you start getting rifles you'll need a rod system but not for pistols.

The ones at Cheaper Than Dirt, Academy Sports or Walmart will do. They are under $10.

I like the boresnake idea a lot. I think that might be the way I go.

Get a boresnake, something to pull patches with, some small brushes and some of the tipton plastic gun cleaning picks (midway item 778870) and you will have the start of a good kit. I would also suggest a decent 'cleaning mat'. As for solvents and lube, I like Break Free CLP, 'gun butter' lube, and Otis bore solvent as my main chemicals...but I seem to collect gun cleaning stuff so I have a whole box of various junk I use from time to time...

Main thing: Get some basic items then after a few cleanings you will know what you want/need and you will probably save a few bucks if you roll your own kit.
