Congrats. I wonder if I was the only person who, upon reading the thread title, was expecting a tale of woe involving multiple rounds going downrange per pull of the trigger. What it actually was sounds much better.

That's what I thought when I read the thread title, so you weren't the only one. The other thought I had was that the price had doubled, and I was pretty sure that didn't happen!

The .38 from a snubbie is noticeably stiffer than the xd-9

I have 3 S&W J frames in .38 and two XD9sc. The S&Ws all kick more then the XDs. One is a 1957 vintage Chiefs Special and one is a model 49 Bodyguard, both all steel. They are not rated +p and even with standard power rounds you know you are shooting a gun.
I also have a new 442. With +p it is a bear. After five rounds I am done and my hand hurts (I have a 4inch 686, .357, and it is easier to shoot even with full house rounds, I cannot imagine shooting an Airlite snubbie .357). Shooting standard pressure .38s in it is challenging for me. I bought it for my wife to have at home when I was out. A misstake, and why I got the second XD. The XD is much nicer to shoot then any of the J frames. Take your honey to a range that rents guns and have her try out several different kinds and then get the one she likes, and shoots best, for her. Ken
