Help choosing an XD model
I am looking to get my first handgun and I've decided to go with the SA XD. I like all of the safety features that are incorporated and I have a friend who has raved about his. I'm having trouble deciding on which model to choose though so I thought I'd ask around. I'm getting it primarily for home defense, although I'll use it at the range somewhat regularly, and want to conceal and carry as well. And in case it matters, I'm a fairly small guy with not a lot of meat on his bones.

Once you say that you want it for concealed carry, I think you've got to go with one of the SC models, either the XD9SC or the XD40SC. I've got a XD40SC and love it. Very reliable and quite accurate for a 3" barrel. Others will tell you that you can conceal a larger model, but for as well as the SC models shoot, I'm not sure that you're really giving up much at the range by going with the short barrel.

Does your friend have one you could shoot? If you are going to conceal, you could go with the subcompact, as it's the smallest.
As for caliber? Whatever you can handle really, it is very subjective.

XD SC 9mm----> easy to conceal, enough gun for HD, plenty of fun at the range, ammo is relatively cheap, and 9mm is a GREAT starter caliber.

I agree - and call some local ranges to see if they have different XD's to rent.

Its a very tough decision! So tough in fact I now have two XD's. I got the 40sc, but then 5 months later I bought the 45compact. For a range/home defense/carry gun, I would recomend the 45 compact. It is only one inch longer in the barrel and is still easy to conceal. You get the accuracy of a 4 inch barrel and the concealability of the short grip. You cant beat the stopping power of the 45. Just my personal opinion. My girlfriend has the 9sc, and she really likes it. Its also easier on your wallet when it comes to ammo prices. You really cant go wrong with any of these models.

You will need a sub compact, service and a tactical to satisfy your XD appetite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ive owned a xd-40 service and now a xd-45 tactical and my best friend has a xd-9 compact.. all are great weapon.. for concealed i really like my buddies compact and pretty accurate for its size.. for home defense though you just can beat 14 rounds of .45 coming out of a 5 inch barrel. but if you want something nice and right in the middle..ahh thats where my friend the xd-40 service model fits in.

Just thought I'd give everyone the update as to which model I ended up getting. I got the .45 compact and I'm loving it! Thanks for all the input.

My GF has a XD 45 compact and she loves it. Now post pictures of it and take it out and shoot about 500 rounds through it, post a range report about how much you absolutly love this gun. That is all
