Can you submit photos. Are the factory rounds or reloads? Initially it sounds like a problem with the presentation of the round from the magazine which may mean adjust the mag lips a little. Picture would help a lot.

I probably won't be able to get pics til next week but basically it is a 3/4 cresent about a 32nd of an inch sliced off the back of the shell it just looks like a "C" that comes flying out with the shell and has several times landed on my right fore arm.
These are factory loads, I was using mag techs and wwb.

sounds to me like a light recoil spring making the extractor (the shape you describe) rip the case lip.

thatd be the first place i looked....

What brand & grain round is that? I was shooting my .40 when I first got it & had something hit me in the lip. I could not find the casing to know if thats what it was or not. I was shooting 180 gr Magtech.

The magtechs are 180 and the winchesters are 165.
What exactly would I be looking for in the "recoil spring"???
Thanks guys.
BTW I was having trouble (I should say my son) w/ FTF and the slide locking open but after I told him about "limp wristing" he had no further problems now that he controlled his grip better.

It sounds very much like the nose of the bullet is hitting the top of the barrel before entering the firing chamber. This is usually caused by the bullet being presented wrong from the magazine. Does this happen with all magazines or just one, if just one identify that magazine. If you have a set of digital calipers measure the gap between the lips of your magazines, they should measure a little over 10mm. If these were reloads I would suspect the Over All Length to be too long but being factory ammo I lean towards it being a magazine problem.

And if it is the mag can I simply tweak it to fit the 10 mm gap to resolve the problem?
These are the original mags, thanks this is some good info.
