I wish i could work with an XD45ACP instead of my little 9MM Berratta M9.

It would be lighter, smaller, and i think more dependable.

I would like that alot better, and id feel safer.

I am all for XD's being more popular but it might not be the best choice for every officer.
There are several reasons, and before I list them, let me the first to say I'd ditch my dept. issued G22 and carry a personally owned XD40 in a heartbeat, if I could.

One matter is uniformity. Many departments want their officers uniform, from the cars they drive, to the uniforms they wear, and the duty gear they carry and the gun they shoot. It easier to manage an entire departments inventory of one or two models of gun, rather than keep track of what everyone carries.

Another is serviceability. We have two or three Glock armorers in my PD that can pretty much fix any issue that may arise with one of our guns. If the department allowed each officer to carry their own gun, then that officer would likely have to be responsible for getting it serviced, since the department probably won't contract with a bunch of gunsmiths to facilitate the repair of a large variety of guns. If that's the case, and a gun had to be sent off for repair, then that officer is without. And since the officer would likely not own two identical guns (XD owners aside, because we all love our XD's that much), he would have to find something else to carry. If the dept. provides a loaner, the officer may be unfamiliar with that particular gun and there may be some policy requirements, such as qualification and training with the loaner gun. Along the same lines, if an officer is involved in a shooting, the gun will be taken. Rather than the PD being liable for the personally owned gun of one of it's officers, at the same time removing that personally owned gun and replacing it with something else, it is easier to issue another gun which is likely already owned by the department, identical to the one that's used and trained with.

Hope that helps.

But again, as I stated, I would LOVE to be able to carry my XD as my duty weapon, if it were at all possible.

And that is why I never give a cr*p about what PD is using an XD. They never buy what is best, they buy what is cheapest, and Glock and S&W have years of experience losing money on PD guns, so they can advertise about the usage.

I don't think SA is actively seeking to win any Police contracts? I think their main focus is the civilian market.

Wasn't the whole idea of the XD for police and military use? Hence the name XD, eXtreme Duty. Plus they just put a slide safety on the XD45 to suite the needs of the police and military. Police and military contracts are good for business, no?

I would have to agree, particularly with the addition of the manual safety on the .45. My understanding was that they did that specifically to appeal to the government market which frowns upon single-action pistols with no manual safety.

They may not be trying to win a specific law enforcement contract, but I think that move shows they are definetely trying to expand their customer base into the government market.
