Got my first XD, what first?

Well I put the money down on the XD-40 service so after a long 10-day wait I will have her. My question is what do you guys reccomend doing first? By this I mean before shooting it, should I clean it, adjust anything, etc?

Some will tell you to clean it first. I didn't and had no problems.... although I clean it after every shooting now.

The great thing about the XD is nothing really needs to be done.... except shoot the hell out of it.

Enjoy

You can clean it. I shot mine from the box but some like to clean it first.
Ammo. Buy a lot of ammo and then start shopping for a holster. Crossbreed is pretty popular and comfortable but if you have a few extra coins to spend, I recommend Highnoon holsters.

Shooting the hell out of it will be no problem... I am one to take great care of these things, cleaning after every trip, etc.. I am also all for preventitive measures like cleaning before it has the first round through it if necessary.

I ordered a new XD9SC this morning. I called SA Customer support to ask about cleaning and they said shooting it new out of the box without cleaning would be fine. I'm still inclined to clean it first, though.

I also asked about dry firing and he said that it was fine to do "some" dry firing without snap caps. But he said if your planning to do a lot of dry fire practice, it would be best to use snap caps.

Off topic but the dry firing thing confuses me. I was raised and taught to really never dry fire a gun if not needed. Now my brother is going through the Sherriff academy right now and was just issued his glock. The Seargent who issued to him told him to go home and repeatedly dry fire the gun with both hands to get used to the gun and strengthen his fingers. I am confused.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread with the dry-firing comment I tacked on after the reply about cleaning.

Briefly, there are some guns that shouldn't be dry fired, but there are many that can be. I dry fire my S&W 640 revolver and my CZ452 .22 rifle. I called both CZ's and S&W's customer service departments to ask before doing so and both said "no problem."

Here are a couple of links with more info:
