While I understand what your point is, unless it's the only way to break free, trying to draw any gun from any concealment position will be damn tough to do with a bad guy right on top of you. If you can't break free somehow to create distance, then you are giving your attacker a chance to disarm you and/or get your gun away from you. Knowing where most folks carry a CCW firearm, I can't imagine them being able to quickly draw from concealment, and never saw any of my fellow deputies practice drawing their "belly gun". Half of them didn't even replace their uniform shirt buttons with snaps or velcro so they could get at their back up gun quickly. Then, you would have to be very strong and fit to shake off a very determined attacker that not only got you surprised, but now has an advantage over you. The OP seems to be a LEO. He's clearly taken some training in how to perform in this kind of scenario. When I was a road deputy, the most hostage training we got was "Try to keep the bad guy in sight, and try to keep them from going anywhere, and call your supervisor". That was 12 years ago. I'm glad that LEO's are getting better training than I had, but I am still curious as to how often this opportunity presents itself, and if many departments might even have policies regarding how they expect their officers to react to a hostage situation (mine is quoted above, albeit very simplistically). Our version of a stand off device was a wooden baton or 4 cell maglite.
