9mm to 40?
can the 9mm be converted to 40 by swapping the barrel and spring, the way 40 and 357 sig can be swapped for many guns?

Correct, the slide on the 9mm is only bored for the diameter of the standard 9mm barrel. If it were a .40 or .357 you could go the other way, as you'd end up with a 9mm barrel with thicker walls.
