Interesting stuff. I'll keep an eye out for rust on my recently purchased XD40. First handgun I've ever owned or shot to a significant degree...think I'm up to 500 rounds since I bought it last month... I use CLP (I'm military...stuff is plentiful for me) and a silicone cloth and a can of CRC heavy duty silicone spray I bought at Wal-Mart. No rust but I bought a few of those Zorb-it Ci packets to control moisture and are supposed to have a corrosion inhibiting agent. Keep one with the XD and one with my Ruger.

Not even close.

There is no way that the XD has a hot caustic blue.

I've had blued guns all my life and while they require a bit more care than stainless or polymer, I have never had a rust problem with them. Like Vampire, I am a C&R collector and have a lot of older guns that have a pretty thin finish on them.

Of the 80-odd guns in my collection, the XDs are the ones that rust first and rust worst.

The XD's finish, if I had to speculate, is probably nothing more than the black oxide dip that toolmakers use. It looks like bluing but does not compare at all.

The next time I fire up my bluing tank, I will hot blue one of my XD slides, and leave the other alone. Then I'll see which one rusts first.

The only gun I had ever onwed that had any rust was a CZ-75B in glossy blue finish. The finish wore thin along the back of the grip on the frame and developed a couple of small rust spots that I cleaned up and kept an eye on. I never had a similiar experience with my XD-9 and the finish on it is getting worn also. As the CZ-75 was my first gun I suspect that my gun care and cleaning have gotten more thorough then they were when I started shooting. I stil think proper care and storage when not in use is the key. Maybe we should start a poll to see what the actual numbers are, who has rust and who does not.

Good point about the C&R guns, Ken!...I have a few also with the blued finish, and not one of them has ever rusted with normal care.
