Advice on Carry Weapon
I'm looking for input from a few people with experience.
I am waiting on my CCW to come back from the state, it's a 90 day wait and i'm half way through the wait. I've decided that the Bi-tone .40SC i have won't make a good summertime Concealment weapon. I use a shoulder holster that I like quite a bit, but without a jacket it just won't due. I have been eyeballing a new 3" sub-compact w/ Trijicon sights but I can't decide if i want to double up weapons or not. I've got the .40 and the EFK conversion barrel for 9mm. If I go with another XD I don't want to miss out on the chance to pick up a different weapon. I was curious about the Glock 29 & 30 for carry. Owning a 10mm sounds pretty good but so does being able to buy 1 box of practice rounds for 2 guns. This is kind of a start to my collection, i do have various rifles but pistols catch my eye alot more right now. I'm 5'6" 155lbs so I'm looking for a weapon with a short grip and easily concealable wearing semi-baggy shorts and a T-shirt. Any advice welcome. EDIT: to be clear i currently have a .40 service carry. Last edited by lbsnowryder; 04-26-2008 at 02:42 PM. |

I would recommend a Kahr PM9. I switched from a .40 XD SC and it makes a world of difference in conceal ability.
Kahr PM9 Micro 9mm, 3 Inch, Polymer, 6rd Mags you'll spend a bit more, but its a great gun.

Ummm Sub Compact was MADE for optimal concealment in the XD series. I dont understand why a subcompact xd wont do for summer time concealment? Personally from my experience/research i wouldnt go with anything smaller, you start to lose control of the gun, and the accuracy becomes lesser as well.
If you're worried about your subcompact printing (showing through your clothing) think about it this way; if someone's targeted you for a mugging or what not and theyre sizing you up, and see what looks like a handgun underneath your shirt its going to turn them away. It's not all that bad of a thing, it keeps people guessing. |

Like jcabin mentioned, anything smaller than a SC XD just doesn't feel right in my hands. My SC XD disappears under a t-shirt and shorts using my Crossbreed Supertuck. It is great for summer carry!

Consider a revolver for summer carry, you can find light weight ones that you can easily carry in a pocket like the Taurus 85 Series or the Smith and Wesson J Series. If you are like me and don't mind a little larger gun that provides more firepower, check out the Taurus 617 and 817 Series or the S&W K Series. S&W has their light-weight scandium frame revolvers and my personal choice is a Taurus 617SH2C which is a Titanium frame, 7 shot, 2" 357 mag. You can even get Crimson Trace grip on many of these making them very easy to shoot.

Kel tec's p3at in 380 auto is pretty small. Its a 6 and 1, its kinda hard to control but its smaller than a wallet.

Also, check out the S&W 640 5-shot SS revolver. It shoots .357 and .38 special.
Not bad to have one of these around the house at all.

I use my XD40SC as my every day carry, its just as easy to CC as my FEG .380 (single stack 7+1, Walter PPK clone) I just use a cheep black hawk IWB holster and I can appendex carry with just a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. (I also don't wear baggy clothing, so unless your shorts and pants are painted on, you shouldn't have trouble CC the XD SC)

The sub-compact XDs are very nice pieces, suitable for IWB carry. However, if you want to drop it in your pocket, it's a bit bulky for that. The P3AT is good, but for just a bit bigger size, you can get the Kel-Tec PF-9, which is a pocket-carryable 9mm.

A new IWB holster would be much cheaper than a new pistol.
