Loaded Chamber Indicator- Not going down

I wondered this for a while, but noticed looking at other peoples XD pics that the loaded chamber indicator should be flat with the slide when it's empty. On my XD-45C it stays sticking up and only goes up a tiny bit when there is a round in the chamber. I don't know how long it's been doing this, but assumed it was normal until I started thinking it's really hard to tell if there's a round in there or not with that thing not hardly moving, and then confirmed it should be down from other people's pictures. Has anyone else experienced this?

Also, is there a good website or something showing how to fully disassemble the xd, specifically the 45c?

WOW! Great info and great link! Thank you much tomfoolery!

Also, I called Springfield and the guy seems to think it's just dirty from carbon build up as well. Thanks again and happy shooting!

Definitely clean it up and get it working properly, but that's the reason to never rely on it as anything other than decoration.

For a chamber check, if there's light, look at the brass in the chamber. If it's dark, touch the brass in the chamber. Anything else is anyone's guess as to the condition of the gun.

Probably just crud--happened to me before after a long shooting session. Drove out the retaining pin, removed the spring and indicator, cleaned it all and problem solved.

Good advice and you should never rely totally on the indicator. The design is safe though b/c in this situation you'd only be in danger if it were stuck up and you thought you had a round in the chamber pulled the trigger and nothing.

I don't use the indicator for proof positive, but I do want it functioning. It's one of the reasons I went with the XD 45c over the Glock30 for my CCW. It's really great how XDs provide you with a loaded chamber and cocked indicator that is both visible and palpable. Great defense designs!!!

Well yeah but don't forget that when you want it to go bang and it goes click, that may well be just about the last sound you ever hear (for the rest of your now very short life). Safety works both ways. If you want it unloaded make proof positive sure it's unloaded. If you want it loaded -- same deal -- make proof positive sure it's loaded.

Philadelphia's exactly right. Whenever I carry my XD or my 1911 for self defense I always do a press check to be sure there's "one in the pipe" before holstering!

Also, got the indicator working properly. A little cleaning with my Ed's Red solvent + CLP and it's good to go! Then I shipped the slide out to Gilbert's Gun Shop to have the TruGlo Fiber Optic + Tritium sights installed. Such a deal for the sights, installation, and shipping back to me at $103.45! Good thing I found the deal through this forum! I've always thought fiber optic and tritium was a great combo for a defense pistol and Gilbert's sale made it too hard to pass up. I can't wait to get it back and try them out!!!
