how can you get any ballistic fingerprinting on a shell casing, forensics do fingerprinting on the bullet itself since each gun makes unique scratches on the bullet. I dont see the shell casing doing much, if any

Like Nastynewt said, "to show your gun fires that was a test bullet at springfield".

There is no gun grabber conspiracy. It's just quality control. Springfield includes the spent casing to show it was test fired before shipment.

Firing pin/striker impactFiring pin or striker impact will leave an imprint in the primer. This may be of use in identifying the weapon that fired the round, especially when used in conjunction with other identifying characteristics, such as breech face makings or extractor and/or ejector markings. As an example, Glock™ pistols have a very characteristically shaped striker that is unlike any other pistol found in this country. Brass found with a "rectangular" striker print on the primer are easily identified as being fired in a Glock™.

Untrue Myth... The fired case is required by law in some states who do ballistic fingerprinting so all gun manufacturers include a spent case with all guns sold in the US. Each gun leaves unique extractor and firing pin marks along with other characteristics which can be used to trace a cartridge to a particular gun. The spent round that comes with the XDs is actually fired at the factory in Croatia.

M. Cvitak did my test fire, too... but on Nov. 16, 2007. Good to know he's been gainfully employed for at least 4 months!

That little envelop is a legal document in states that require it. In such states you are required to take that to your local Sheriff's office so they can file it away. In these states, if you tamper with, i.e. open the envelop, the chain-of-custody has been destroyed and you could be in some trouble.

For those of us in states that do not require this to be filed with local authorities we can do anything we want with it.

When you purchase you XD, the dealer should tell you whether you need to do anything with that little envelop.
