It happened to me too!!!

The slide on my brand new bi tone sevice model is rusted already!!! Damn. This is my bedside pistol that gets no carry time. I clean it every range trip and I use some sort of rag to wipe it down that is supposed to prevent rust or corrosion. I went to the local gun store and the owner told me to get this bad boy re finished or else I would be constantly fighting this rust problem. So I was thinking about following through and sending it to Tripp research for some hard chrome. How is his work? any other suggestions out there? Should I also go ahead and the get the feed ramp polished and the breach cleaned up? Thanks for the help!!

If your pistol has fed your chosen ammo well, the polish job would seem unnecessary. I, too have a rusting Bi-Tone. I suspect the cause is the SS has come in contact with some carbon steel, this will cause the SS to rust easier. Be sure if you do have yours chromed that they do all the parts, grip safety included. Mine will rust before I get it home from a day at the range. My hands sweat in the heat and no matter what oil I use its rusts. Guess I'll have to start carrying a oiler with me all the time.

I've decided that by the time I'm ready to ship my XD off, I'm going to get the Canyon Creek Trigger job, new sights AND the Slide refinished. I had some minor rust on my slide once, but since I've been cleaning it with Eezox and rubbling it down later with a Silicon Rag the rust hasn't reappeared.

Tripp is supposed to to good work. You can polish the feed ramp yourself.

you might try this:

Passivating Stainless Steel

I have found some links that suggest that citric acid can be used to passivate stainless.

.pdf on citric acid passivation

Now that was some interesting reading.

For what it's worth, my XD Bi-Tone rusts too. I have also successfully rusted my hard chromed XD.

Who did you get to hard chrome your bi tone? Will they fix it, or are you stuck with it?

I posted some pics of my sons XD9 finished by Tripp have a look. I for one have not had any rust problems but my son's XD did. He lived in Houston so the humidty was pretty high I live in southwest Texas, Sonora Desert so I don't have a problem with humidity.
