Mahovsky's Metalife. Do not send them your XD. They don't have a clue how to work on them.

As for the rust, I just took it off with a pencil eraser. It's not really a constant problem, it's only happened about two times and both times it was just surface rust. A little bit of oil and it's fine.

Keep in mind, I wear my XD from the moment I get dressed until I change for bed. Around the house, around town, everywhere.

Should I go ahead and get all the metal parts of the gun hard chromed, or just the slide?

I would get everything chromed just to have all of my bases covered.

But before you get your gun refinished, make sure you have any gunsmithing you want done to your pistol already performed so you don't have to re-refinish parts later.

How is it that I have not seen a speck of rust on my XD-40 Service at all and I live in horribly hot and humid Houston and carry the thing often outdoors, in the ever-changing weather and whatnot?

Wierd, huh?

Are all you rust people carrying in an IWB holster? I am not and I wonder if thats the problem.

Nope. I carry IWB everyday and I have no rust problems. Not even in area's where the finish is completely rubbed off from holster wear.

Any idea how that happened, and how bad is it?

If these are stainless steel slides then somebody screwed up at the factory in either the design or manufacturing stages. Either a stainless steel of inadequate corrosion resistance was used, or the slide was not properly passivated. Stainless steel contains some impurities that need to be removed in order to prevent them from becoming weak points for corrosion to attack. Passivation chemically removes these impurities from the surface of the steel, leaving the stainless steel clean and less susceptable to rust. It is possible that one of the "enviornmentally friendly" passivations solutions was used and did not do an adequate job.

I have no beef if my carbon steel slide rusts a little, that's to be expected, but if I bought a SS gun and it rusted under the circumstances descibed, I would expect SA to correct the situation with no cost to me. Just my $0.02. Good luck.

There are like five different grades of stainless steel. On a 450.00 gun it ain't likely you got one of the better grades.

no rust here

I carry everyday in a IWB and have no rust. Missouri is a high humidity state. I wipe it down everynight I put it up, and that is all.
