Here's the TSA web page:

TSA: Traveling with Special Items

Some airlines may have additional restrictions. For example,
American requires the ammo to be in the original packaging,
not in magazines.

I'm traveling alone, so I was planning on 1 carry-on and 1 checked-in garmet bag. I was planning on stowing the XD in the case it came in (which has a hole for a lock to go through. The case would be in the garmet bag.

Not to sound stupid here, but I don't fly much. Can I have the checked bag (and thus the XD case) inspected right at check in, then lock it up and take the key with me?

Also, I've never heard of a TSA lock, although that makes sense. Are those available at the airport?

I have an SKB and a Pelican case that are both ATA rated and are lockable. Each holds 2 pistols and accessories and they cist about $50 each.

That's exactly where you'll declare the firearm. When you're checking in simply let them know you've got a unloaded firearm to declare. They'll give you a form to sign and then they'll "inspect" it. This inspection varies wildly from airport to airport and from staff to staff. Read my previous post about the signature card and how to handle TSA. Yes, take the key with you, don't leave it with anyone else. If they need to open the case, they'll call you over the PA (hence, staying with the firearm until TSA clears it).

Great tip for traveling, and keeping your hand gun from going bye-bye.

Maybe this was mentioned but you can't use a skycap, you must check your baggage at the regular counter.

DO NOT USE A TSA LOCK!!!

Once the check in guy gives you the card to put with the gun, it stays locked until you arrive at your destination. They are not allowed to open it without you present. Make sure you have the key on you, not in your luggage. If they feel they need to inspect it further, they must locate you and take you to it. TSA IS NOT ALLOWED TO OPEN YOUR DECLARED GUN CASE.

For the rest of your luggage, TSA locks are avalable at wal-mart in the luggage section. They have a red triangle or circle or something right on it.

You may want to read this thread to see what you might be up against should anything happen to your firearm.

Once you fill out the card and put inside your gun box and lock it, and then lock it inside your suitcase, just follow your bag to the area that TSA is running it through thier X-Ray machine. If they need to open it, you'll be there, and have a key. If you see the bag go through the X-Ray machine and TSA send it on it way, just walk away and head to the gate.

I've checked guns on American Air and America West(US Air) quite a bit, and it not a problem. As a few others have said, go early, as the ticket agent checking you in may not have done it before, and take a little extra time.

You can get a TSA approved lock almost anywhere luggae is sold. Remember only use the TSA lock on your luggage, and a real lock on your firearm.
