Hunting with XD 40 Tactical
I am look for anyone who has tried hunting deer with an XD 40. I am looking for range and wound track info. I have 2 cop friends that killed deer with their 40s. I have attempted to research this on the internet but everything says that auto are not for hunting. This appears to be because of a lack of effective hunting range. I am not looking to hunt at long range I just want a Bow that goes “BANG” Thanks for your info in advanced.

I have never used any pistol for deer hunting, but personally think you should go with something bigger than a .40. If it was me, I wouldnt use anything smaller than a 357 mag. Just my opinion.

Pistol hunting
It's to bad the XD is not availible in 10mm yet cause the 10mm is roughly equivilent to the 41 mag. I have seen a few hog hunters use the 10mm and it would work for deer. The 357 is marginal for deer, you must pay close attention to ammo used and you are limited to yardage. Better luck with a 41mag (10mm), 45LC, 44 mag. ......Good Luck !

I also wouldn't go lower then .357 mag. IMO, even with the .357 it's only really effective for extremely close shots or to kill the deer after it's been wounded with a prior shot.

I only use my XD40 for kill/putdown shots if I when I walk up on a deer/pig that I had already shot with my hunting rifle and it is not dead yet.
You should not try to hunt with your xd40 as your primary gun. If you did you would have a hard time getting a shot that would kill or wound it where it would go down so you can get to it. Most likely you are going to maim the animal and not be able to finish it off and that my friend is not correct hunting and is cruel! I will not hunt with anyone that does not respect animals and strive to try and kill the animal correctly and have it suffer the shortest amount possible. Bring the correct caliber for what you are hunting. You don't take a handgun to kill deer just like you dont take a .470 Nitro Express to kill a Squirrel.

Is it legal in your state, would be the first question?
My state has restrictions that have the effect of limiting handgun hunting to .44Magnum and above revolvers. |

Wait...you don't???? Why the hell not!!! Haha, jk! I agree with you though, hunting should be performed with the proper caliber. The animal should be put down with the least amount of suffrage.

I guess I should have been clearer this will not be my primary Gun. I am considering it as a possible option for very short range. I tree stand hunt with a 50 cal TC Omega with a Nikon 3x9 scope on it for gun season. At Sub 25 yards it would be nice to have something that is a bit more challenging. My 2-cop friends have both killed deer at this range with a 40 and in both cases the deer went down in less than 20 Yards. They said the wound track was more than enough to kill any deer if your aim is good. I was looking to see if anyone else has tried something similar and what results you had. I don not want to wound a deer. I will use this info to make my decision if this is a viable option I live in NY and only rules are it must be center fire nothing about cal and barrel length less than 16”. Yes this is ridicules but it allows you to use a handgun as a final shot to put a deer down.
