Muzzle velocity: 3" vs 4" vs 5"
I was just wondering if there is any rough calculation you can make to determine what the muzzle velocity would be from a Tactical versus a Service. Specifically, I have an XD Tactical in 357 sig and most of the tables listing muzzle energy for this round appear to be dervied from 4" barrels and I'd kind of like to know what the same cartridge would do from my 5" barrel. For example, the Hornady 124gr JHP/XTP has a MV listed as 1350 fps from a 4" barrel and I'd like to know what it would be, approximately, from a 5". I know that it wouldn't be 1688 fps (1350 x 5/4) and I can imagine that variations in propellent (fast vs slow) might complicate the calculation.
Thanks, Brian |

All the data I've seen says 50-70 fps per inch difference.

That's about right. I have a thread somewhere on the subject. I tested the 3" vs. the 4" with a chronograph.
As I recall we started to get some funky numbers until I switched out the batteries...

I'm kind of thinking about getting a chrono -- any recommendations? I have two firearms (Bushy Varminter 24" AR-15 and an XD Tactical in 357 sig). I'm also thinking about handloading and if I did the handloading thing then getting a chrono would be pretty much a must have.
So if the 5" is about 60 fps faster than the 4" it should up the muzzle energy a good bit -- about 10% in fact bringing a 124gr bullet up to about 550 ft-lbs. Not many handguns in that range until you get to the hottest 45's or magnums. Brian |
