i think the majority of accuracy with the XDs is trigger control.. the problem with the trigger isn't that it has a mile of take up, it's that it moves on an arc.. so, your finger pad does not actually stay in the same position as it would on a 1911 type trigger.. the movement of the pad of your fingertip is very minute, but apparently it's enough to cause a drop in accuracy with new XD shooters..

i'm not an "expert", but it seems very logical.. the trigger design is very different than a glock, or a 1911's.. the glock has less take up.. the 1911 is a straight back pull..

i think this is one of the real reasons why there are so many people installing trigger kits to remove travel and reset.. the less the trigger actually moves, the less the pad of your finger will slide on the trigger and the more accurate you become with the short trigger take up, and reset..

so, go slow.. take up the trigger to the point of break, then aim, then squeeze the trigger.. doing that will help immensely..

find the reset on the trigger.. cycle your slide while the chamber is empty, then dry fire, but hold the trigger down.. cycle the slide while the trigger is held back, then slowly release the trigger until you find the reset.. make a mental note of where that is.. if you can keep control of the trigger between those points while shooting, it will help with your accuracy with the XD..

i practice dry firing this way.. to remember where to squeeze, and where to release the trigger after it fires.. this has helped me go from a huge shotgun type grouping, to less than 4" at 7 yards.. of course, you have to have good posture and a good grip on the pistol..

try this and see if it helps..

Thanks again for the advice. Someone asked what barrel length I have. To answer your question, it is a 4" service model.

If your XD is new, would it be helpful to call SA to discuss your accuracy problem? Considering that several of your family are having the same problem, is it possible you just happened to get a flawed product? I assume it can even happen to XD's.

There is the very possibility that the gun is just not for you. I have an H&K .40 and although it's a very well made gun and fits well in my hands, I just can't shoot it worth a damn. I have springfields, XD's, M&P's, etc and I shoot them all very well compared to the H&K. With practice I can do ok but it's just not the firearm for me.

Just remember as you go down in barrel length the less accurate you will be. All about being able to control the firearm, make optimal use of the sites, and trigger pull. Once you have that all down correct its a matter of making it habit.

This is why you should NEVER practice with one gun. you alienate the habits and knowledge of other firearms you use.

With my XD9sc I practice at 2 distances. 1st at 12ft for about 50-75rds, then at 30ft for 75-100 rounds. The I will shoot a .45 1911 at 30ft then go back the my XD9sc and start over at 12ft then bump to 30ft.

What this does is it causes me to adjust to "interrupt" or use another firearm, then going back makes remember to correct myself and make sure i am properly staged for the XD9sc. I practice shooting by drawing from a concealed position, draw, 2 hip shots and the remaining 4 are from a squared stance. Yes I practice hip shots from 30ft, lets face it those two shots will be fired faster then someone can react. I may not get center mass, but that target is going to unable retaliate accurately at that distance injured.

I can't say that I agree with this.

The sights for different guns are made to place a shot when their sights are placed at different spots on the target.

If you recall the manual from your XD, it shows you that the sight picture should either be at 6 o'clock to the target or right on the target.

Because the how the XD is sighted, or the 1911 is sighted, you may become familiar with the sight picture of either.

I guess, in short, two guns don't always shoot the same. I shoot consistently and accurately with my CC weapon. I practice with it constantly and know how it shoots. Why then would you want to throw something else into the mix that will hinder your proficiency?

If I am picking up another gun, I will take a minute to study it and how it functions. The only way I will be accurate with it is practice.

why not buy a Saiga?.. get a 10 round mag or 20 round drum mag.. 12 gauge.. should be able to knock the barn down.

I do not want to start banging around on my sights, mainly as I do not have the proper tools and I do not want to mar it up. How much shooting do I need to do to "Break it In" before I can take it to a smith and let him have his way with it?

Thanks in advance!!
I have the answer for you! Pack it up, send it to me, I'll teach it a lesson or two and send it back when it's behaving!

Truly, I don't know how experienced those others, or you are with handguns, but everybody that has shot mine has loved it. Even non-experienced females. One of the ladies bought an XD40sc the day after I let her try mine.

Get to a range where there are some experienced hand and after watching them for a little bit, be honest and open with them about your trials. If they don't offer to try it, don't push it on them but ask if they'd like to see if it's you or the gun. They should be glad to give you some pointers. It'll stroke their ego for you to ask and it darn sure won't hurt you!

I dont mean to hijack the forum and I will not do that but I have a qustion for the XD 40 SC users and they can answer in my PM. Do you guys have a issue with trigger slap? My Sub 40 will slap back hard enough to hurt ur finger after 2 rounds. No I'm not being a pansey and its more than the kick or the grip/finger placement. Several people have shot mine and agree and I have shot others and not an issue in all of them. Anyone else have the same issue?
Sorry again for posting in ur line of questioning.
I am more accurate with my Sub 40 than I am with a Service 9. Its all about the amount you practice (atleast it was for me).

There may be something wrong with it. Aside from a 1911 my xd shoots better groups than any of my friends' guns including glock, S&W, and SIG!!! XD45 ACP service should be great out of the box
