New XD45 and XD 40

Went to the range today to break-in my new XD45 and XD40. The two seem just slightly different in grip size, but both very comfortable. I am a long time Sig fan and have recently added to my collection with these two new XD's. Both Service models in standard black.

I found both very enjoyable to shoot. The triggers take come getting used to, but I quickly adapted. I'm thinking they will both be taking a trip to the factory for trigger work, but very usable for now. 200 rounds through each. I did clean the barrels after the first 5 rounds, then at 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 and just finished the final clean here at home.

200 total rounds through each with no failures.....just smooth operations. Thought I would post the results of my outing. I'm looking forward for more range time.

You probably are aware of this, but the trigger does start to loosen up quite a bit after about 500 rounds.

Oh, welcome to the forum...

I've heard that it's a good idea to clean the barrel in the pattern that you did with the first few dozen rounds out of it... I cleaned mine BEFORE I shot it, then shot about 80 before cleaning it. Does it matter much?

xd45 and xd40

THe cleaning routine is a topic of debate. I personally think it helps, but not sure why. I think it has more to do with heat cycling the barrel more than anything. The cleaner helps cool the hot breech, etc.

I scanned pictures of the session (my targets) but cannot figure out how to post them. Fairly nice groups for the first rounds through the guns.

It's not so much the heat cycling, it's just HELPS keep the barrel from getting those minute scratches during the inital few rounds that CAN get permanently set in.

Quite honestly, on a service type pistol, it is of ZERO significance. I do it out habit, stubborness, doesn't HURT to do it, more than anything else.

The only time you SHOULD do it is with precision rifles (i.e. sub MOA rifles) or with tightly fit, precision barrels.

I usually go something like this on new pistol. 5 rounds....boresnake, for the first 50 rounds. Then, 10 rounds.....boresnake, for the next 50. After than, game on.

On my rifles, the first 50 rounds are just pointed down range and not for any type of grouping. 1 shot.....bore snake. After that, game on.
