I cant see how you could draw a pistol and grab it firmly and not firmly depress the grip safety to shoot it.....
hypothical situation with Mr. know-it-all-gun-seller-guy: The grip safety is taped down so he does not need to worry about it. ok. He draws his weapon for whatever reason, doesnt matter. he goes to re-holster his weapon but b/c he is a moron and probably has a cheaper holster, there is something in the holster that catches in the trigger guard as the gun slides down, now b/c the grip safety is depressed/taped down, the trigger gets pulled and he shoots his damn foot off.... And to think this was the best candidate to get the job, think of the people that didnt get that job

you should of asked him to show you how he would fire the gun without pressing the safety, then you could of watched him try to fumble around and find away and he would either come up with something totally stupid or realize how dumb his logic was.

If I were you I probably would have just stared at him quietly for a few antagonizing seconds...
and then PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE! what a moron! People like that don't need to be working in the firearm department. |

Working on 7,000 + rnds down range and never a single failure to fire. Not 1.
I have done drills drawing from a sitting postion, on my knees, and laying down front side and on my back in order to simulate some possible defensive situations Never once did the grip safety prevent the pistol from firing. Not a issue to me..

Several years ago, when my kids were in middle and elementary school, respectively, I was looking to purchase my first handgun - a Springer Mil-Spec 1911-A1. My wife, who is not a gun enthusiast, was very against having a handgun in the house. I assured her that it would be always secured and never stored loaded, however she was still not happy. Believe me, I sold the hell out of that grip safety feature. The kids hands would not be large enough to actuate it...etc, etc.
My story has a happy ending. She relented and let me have my way. (I also reminded her that I qualified Expert on a 1911-A1 in the Navy). The grip safety won Mom over. Since then, I have acquired an XD9 Service and an absolutely lovely Ruger 22/45 Mk III without so much as a word. Last edited by fourstar60; 04-18-2008 at 04:10 PM. |

His solution was to tie down the grip safety for the rest of the pistol's service life. I tend to agree I don't want safeties on a gun that I may have to use in close proximity to somebody who is intent on killing me. My SW .357 revolver has all the safeties I want in a defense pistol..... |

Bad Grip on the Grip Safety
With my week-old compact .40, I wasted a lot of rounds with FTFs, thinking I had a bunch of bad ammo (Whitebox .40s). I just read on Survivalblog (for Saturday, June 7th) that some folks hands just don't depress the grip safety properly. The fix suggested was to Krazy Glue a couple of strips of plastic (from the cap of an aerosol can--to give an idea of the thickness of the plastic) to the backside of the safety grip.
When I try it out, I'll report back.

The thing about XD's grip safety is that it gets activated only after the thumb reaches its natural position on the other side of the frame ie. it's not about having a TIGHT grip on the handle itself that will ensure a normal gun discharge but simply wrapping your hand around it.
If I understand correctly, this is not the case with 1911 which has a bigger grip safety surface to cover and it's a bit more demanding. |
