I agree with the store employee. what if you need to shoot your XD with your feet, the thumb safety gets in the way.

I'll play Devil's advocate here, but first let me say that I love my XD Service 45 and the grip safety is intact: That being said, I have heard from a guy that is a DIE HARD Glock convert from a career of shooting 1911's competitively that IF he were to ever own an XD for carry that he too would "modify" the grip safety. He points out the XD grip safety is very narrow compared to a 1911. This allows for much less margin for error when securing a grip than a 1911. He states he's seen a few (admits VERY few) FTF's from sloppy grips on XD's and then he personally put rounds downrange out of the same pistols with nothing else done other than securing a good grip. I know the internet makes instant skeptics, but I will say that the guy I'm talking about is a gun guy's gun guy. Again, I haven't changed anything on my pistol, but like I said, Devil's advocacy gives food for thought.

Anawy, I'm quite surprised with the replies here. There was a discussion about this some time ago and quite a few people claimed grip safety should be taped and someone even mentioned there was an officier with a colt .45 that had this problem when engaging a criminal. I personally think grip safety is great and if it wasn't on the gun, I wouldn't be buying my HS that's for sure, especially coming from someone who got used to thumb safeties. |

I haven't been able to shoot the gun at the range without fully pressing the grip safety. How does the dude hold the gun to manage that? Feels hell awkward

^^ It's the web that presses the grip safety, not your whole hand. Which means, you don't even have to hold it tight, you just need to grab it and that's it.
If I understand correctly, 1911 has bigger grip safety and it requires larger portion of the hand to engage it, which might make a quite a difference right there. |

Typical retail moron that thinks he is so much better than the customer because he is on the other side of the counter. Not everyone in retail is dumb, but gun guys at large sporting goods stores tend to be.

Mall Ninjas use secret "Ninja" techniques that don't require you to touch the gun in order to fire it.

He might have meant that in a SD situation, his draw may not be perfect, and is concerned that if his grip wasn't "textbook", the grip safety might not be fully disengaged, and it might cause a problem. This is a theory I have heard before. While I don't agree with it, I understand it, and I have heard worse things from a gunstore clerk.
Again, I don't agree with it, but it's not completely retarded either.
